JCSU Drops CIAA Southern Division Doubleheader to St. Augustine's
Charlotte, N.C. (April 6, 2018) – Visiting St. Augustine's scored 19 total runs on the day en route to a doubleheader sweep over Johnson C. Smith University in the first CIAA Southern Division games for both teams.
In game one, SAU took down the Golden Bulls by a 10-2 score in five innings. The Falcons limited JCSU to just three hits in the game and scored in every inning except the second in the win.
After going up 2-0, JCSU closed the gap to 2-1 in the bottom of the first when Randasia Daniels scored on a Falcon error.
SAU would go up 4-1 in the third inning and then enjoyed a four-run fifth inning to take the 10-1 lead. The Golden Bulls were able to get a run in the fifth when Shenice Harrison tripled to right center and was then brought home via a Daniels bunt single, which made it 10-2.
SAU then was able to retire Daniels on a fielder's choice to end the game.
In game two JCSU used a five-run first inning to take a 5-3 lead. In the spurt, JCSU got a single from Daniels and a two-RBI triple from Evelyn Arguelles. Tia Greene provided a sacrifice fly that drove in Arguelles, making it 5-3.
After SAU would trim the lead to 5-4 in the fifth, they would go ahead 6-5 with two runs in the sixth. JCSU responded by regaining the 7-6 lead with a pair of runs in the home half of the sixth when Daniels delivered a sacrifice fly that scored Tatiyana Mars. Tia Mahoney would then triple, driving in Harrison, who reached earlier of a fielder's choice.
SAU would score three in the seventh to go ahead 9-7 and after allowing a Arguelles single in the seventh, was able to retire the final two JCSU batters to take the sweep of the Golden Bulls.
The wins improve SAU to 9-7 overall, 6-3 in CIAA play and 2-0 in divisional play while JCSU drops to 5-12, 3-5 in CIAA play and 0-2 in the division.
