Golden Bull women knock off Fayetteville State for first Southern Division win

JCSU’s winning streak extended to four

Clutch free throw shooting down the stretch helped the Johnson C. Smith women's basketball team claim a CIAA Southern Division victory over Fayetteville State, 65-63, Saturday afternoon inside Brayboy Gymnasium.

JCSU fell behind in the first quarter, 18-14 but a strong performance in the second and third quarters propelled the Golden Bull women to victory.

Despite a 10 point deficit in points in the paint, JCSU enjoyed a 10 point advantage in points off turnovers to pull ahead in the fourth quarter.  JCSU canned nine of 10 free throws in the final minute to pull off its first divisional win of the season.

Nine different players scored for JCSU led by Blaire Thomas with 14 points.  Malia Rivers added 10 points followed by three more players (Dejane' James, Maiya  Green & Rayeesha Hewlett) with 9 points each.

With the win the Golden Bull women improve to 8-9 overall and 5-2 in conference play.

Fayetteville State falls to 8-7, 3-4 in the CIAA.

JCSU returns to action with divisional games at St. Augustine's (Jan 23) and at Livingstone (Jan 26) before returning home to host Claflin on Monday, January 28
