Golden Bulls Pick up Two Wins at CIAA Volleyball ROUND-UP

BOWIE, MD - The Johnson C. Smith University women's volleyball team swept Bowie State University, 3-0 and edged Elizabeth City State University, 3-2, of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-Up at the A.C. Jordan Arena on Saturday and Sunday.

The Golden Bulls now stand 6-8 overall and 5-6 against CIAA opponents. In addition, Smith has now extended its win-streak to two-straight, posting a 2-2 record in neutral sites and 2-4 mark on the road.

Against BSU (4-14) the Golden Bulls posted the 3-0 victory over the Lady Bulldogs after claiming a 25-23 victory in set one, 25-23 win in the second frame and a 25-18 tilt in the third.

Gaberille Wells led the effort with 10 kills, Taylor Smith had eight kills while Cydney Calhoun dished out 25 assists. Jeneene Lewis finished with 34 stops defensively for the Golden Bulls.

In a five-set thriller nightcap, the Golden Bulls went toe to toe after falling in the second and fourth sets.

In game two, in the fifth stanza, ECSU had a 8-5 lead caused by the Golden Bulls miscues but JCSU recovered to even the score at 8-8.  JCSU would eventually reclaim the lead thanks to two errors by the Vikings that would eventually embark on a 12-9 lead (14-9) as the final point and match win came from a kill of Smith.

Taylor Smith finished with a match-high 16 kills and 12 digs blocks, followed by Wells and Davis who both charted 11 and nine kills. Calhoun recorded 36 assists. Joi Haywood registered a match-high 39 digs.
