CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team picked up a 68-44 victory over Virginia State University, Thursday afternoon in Brayboy Gym. The win is the Golden Bulls second straight as JCSU stands 4-1 on the season.
Smith outscored the Trojans in all four quarters 19-5 in the first stanza and 13-9 in the second while VSU (0-3) narrowed it down within three points in the third and fourth quarters.
Le'Zarea Bowens led a balanced attack effort for JCSU, charting a team-best 12 points and a game high of four rebounds on the season.
Maiya Green drained 10 points and teammates
Aubriana Bonner and
McKeyzia Harts each scored nine points in the win.
Smith would build its largest lead of the game at 23 points (48-25) in the third quarter but in the final stanza, VSU cut the Golden Bulls lead 55-41. A free throw by Bonner with 1:21 left put the Golden Bulls back up as Smith would go onto score five-straight to close the game out with the 68-44 win.
JCSU will continue its home slate on Nov. 23 as they host the Lions of Lincoln (Pa.) University, at 2:00 p.m. in Brayboy Gym.
