Golden Bulls Split at Livingstone winning 3-2

SALISBURY, N.C. -  The Johnson C. Smith University women's volleyball team may have their stars and role players, but it was often hard to tell the difference Tuesday night as the Golden Bulls claimed a 3-2 season split of division foe Livingstone College inside New Trent Gymnasium.

Smith now improves to 9-9 overall, 8-7 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) and 5-5 in the Southern Division. The Lady Blue Bears drops to 11-10 on the year, 6-9 in the league and 4-6 within the division.

The Lady Bears executed a well-balanced attack Gabrielle Wells led the charge with 15 kills, and three aces. Taylor Smith added 12 kills and six blocks while Brianne Davie netted 11 kills.

Cydney Calhoun dished out 31 assists while Elyse Bonnett had five assists. Joi Haywood collected 29 digs in the win.

Smith built a 11-point cushion in the opening set to lead 14-3 over the Lady Blue Bears. The Golden Bulls held on to their lead before grooming a 24-16 advantage thanks to three kills down the stretch. Smith would secure the set win with a kill by Wells for the 25-17 win.

Both teams battled back and forth in the second set, featuring seven ties with the last knotted at 23-even but an attack error by the Lady Blue Bears and a kill from Smith prevailed the Golden Bulls to the 29-27 edge and a 2-0 lead heading into the third set.

The Lady Blue Bears took over sets three and four winning 25-23 and 27-25 to force a fifth set. In the fifth set was close for both teams, Shaw grew a lead as large as three on two occasions before a bad set from Livingstone to give the Golden Bulls the 15-13 win.

Smith will return to action on Nov. 11 when the Golden Bulls host Winston-Salem State University for Senior Night inside Brayboy Gymnasium. First serve is slated for 6 p.m.
