Panthers Sneaks by Golden Bulls 33-19; Wilson Wins Offensive MVP

RICHMOND, Va. -   Running back Emanuel Wilson scored twice in the contest as Johnson C. Smith University football team falls 33-19 to the Panthers Virginia Union University Saturday afternoon at Historic Hovey Field.
 
With the loss, Smith now stands 1-2 overall on the season while the Panthers move to 2-1 overall.
 
For the contest, Smith finished with 235 total yards of offense that featured 48 yards through the air and 187 on the ground while VUU recorded 323 total yards (267 passing, 56 rushing).

Offensively, Wilson rushed for 152-yards on 29 carries and a game-high two touchdowns while quarterback Malik Evans threw for 34 yards (5–14-0). 
 
The Panthers scored the game's opening touchdown on a one-yard run from running back Rodney McKay, followed by a good point after attempt to give VUU a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
 
The Golden Bulls would respond in the first frame when Wilson ran in the end zone off a one-yard rush. JCSU was responsible for 75-yards on 12 plays that possession to even the score at 7-7 with 4:08 on the game clock.
 
Union would reclaim the lead when Charles Hall scampered in  the 74 yard touchdown pass from Khalid Morris. Before intermission when Christian Benitez kicked a field goal worth 25-yards and Wilson ran in for three yard to give the Golden Bulls a 16-14 advantage.
 
In the fourth quarter, JCSU's Benitez would extend the Golden Bulls lead 19-14 at the 12:10 mark. However, two minutes later, VUU's Morris hooked up with Hall again on a 11-yard pass in the end zone that would put the Panthers ahead 20-19 after the failed two point conversion. 
 
In the final stanza, VUU's Jefferson Souza connected on a 44 and 26-yard field goals and the Panthers would intercept Evans pass and return it 40 yard to the end zone. 
 
Demarcus Jordan and David Francis each led the Golden Bulls defense with five total tackles.


Wilson was named Offensive MVP of the Williard Bailey Classic.
 
Smith will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 28 at Virginia State University for a CIAA Cross Division matchup. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
