CHARLOTTE - The Johnson C. Smith University football team roared out to a 14-7 lead in the first half, and then used a strong passing game and opportunistic defense to top Saint Augustine's University on Homecoming winning 34-13, at the Irwin Belk Complex on Saturday afternoon in nationally televised game.
Offensively, JCSU (1-7, 1-5 CIAA) turned in 490 yards of total offense, including 198 through the air while the Golden Bulls defense held the Falcons (0-7, 0-6 CIAA) to seven points in the first half and limiting its powerful run game to 292 yards on the ground.
Receiver
Reggie Bryant was a workhorse in the Golden Bulls spread attack, gaining a career-high 135 yards on eight receptions and three touchdowns while
Antonio Wallace registered 198 yards on 12-of-19 passes and four touchdowns.
JCSU struck first in the first quarter when Wallace connected with Bryant for a 50 yard TD. Pavel Buenaventura extra point gave JCSU a 7-0 lead heading into the second quarter.
SAU's first score of the game came on a seven play drive worth 65 yards capped off by a 10 yard rushing touchdown from Christopher Perkins.
However, JCSU put together a 12-play 64 yard drive topped off by a Wallace and Bryant connection for a 23 yard reception TD that would give the Golden Bulls a 21-7 and then again JCSU scored on a two yard run leading 28-7 control going into the fourth quarter.
SAC then scored again, this time on a 14 yard scamper from Perkins that would score the Falcons 13 to 34.
In addition, the win also marked the first win of the season for the Golden Bulls.
Louis Rogers and
Demarcus Jordan led the Golden Bulls defense with five tackles and two tackle for loss..
JCSU returns to the field on Saturday, Nov. 6 for their final home game. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Irwin Belk Complex.
