Men’s Basketball to Tip-off 2021-22 season at Newberry Classic

CHARLOTTE - Under the leadership of Stephen Joyner, Sr. in his 34th season, the Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball program will begin its 2021-22 season this weekend with a pair of games in the Newberry Classic hosted by Newberry College at the Eleazer Arena on Friday, Nov. 12 and Saturday, Nov. 13.

The Golden Bulls will face Catawba College on Friday at 5 p.m.; following a contest with Newberry on Saturday at 6 p.m.

JCSU comes off a 20-8 campaign with a 13-4 record in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference while also capturing the Southern Division during the 19-20 season.
 
The Golden Bulls return 10 players from the 2019-2020 season, including All CIAA Rookie Chaz Gwyn, who played in all 19 games. He averaged 3.3 points per game, 0.7 rebounds per outing and 2.8 assists per outing.
 
In addition, JCSU has one Division I transfer in freshman Jared White, as well as Justin Day both whom is expected to produce this season for the Golden Bulls.

Newberry College men's basketball program is projected to finish fifth in the South Atlantic Conference Preseason Poll as voted on by the coaches after finishing the previous season with a 9-6 record.
Catawba men's basketball had its season come to end in 2021 after a 93-70 loss to host Tusculum in a quarterfinal game of the 2021 Pilot Flying J South Atlantic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament. The seventh-seeded Catawba Indians finish up at 9-11.

Following this weekend's games, the Golden Bulls host the Wendy's/Claude Saunders Tip-Off Classic in their home opener on Friday, Nov. 19. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
