CHARLOTTE - The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team fell to No. 5 Queens (NC) 85-83, inside Curry Arena Saturday afternoon. With the loss, JCSU is now 2-3 on the year and Queens improves to 6-0 on the season.
Chaz Gwyn led JCSU in double figures with 21 points.
Austin Nelson recorded 16 points and grabbed five rebounds.
In a back-and-forth game with just two ties in the second half and 10 lead changes, the Golden Bulls attempted a furious comeback attempt down three with 1:23 remaining. Nelson's dunk sent JCSU up by one point.
Gwyn's three-point attempt at the buzzer was short, to give Queens the two-point win.
Queens went 27-for-63 from the field and 20-for-28 from the free throw line, but placed four players in double digits scoring. Jamari Smith led the Royals with 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting.
The Golden Bulls finished the contest, shooting 54 percent from the floor 30-of-55 and 15-for-15 at the free throw line for 100 percent. JCSU was out rebounded 34-30 and outscored 22-10 in second chances and 35-25 from their bench players.
