Charlotte, N.C. – In a match that featured 25 ties and 11 lead changes, the visiting Fayetteville State Broncos outlasted the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University by a 3-2 (21-25,25-21, 25-18, 17-25 and 10-15) score at Brayboy Gym on Monday night.
Fayetteville State managed to pull away in the first set to take a 25-15 win, but the second set was a back-and-forth affair. Down the stretch, neither team was able to build a lead of more than two points, but JCSU took the win after two consecutive FSU attacking errors.
JCSU was able to rebound in set three, taking the 25-18 win. In the set, JCSU would lead by as many as six points (16-10) but the Broncos rallied to cut the JCSU cushion to 18-16. The Golden Bulls would not surrender the lead the rest of the set, winning 25-18.
In set four, FSU went on a 10-2 run to close out the match, winning 25-17.
In the final set FSU went on to win 15-10. This was the first time that JCSU took FSU to five game since 2018.
Camri Goodwin led JCSU with 17 kills on the night
Yasmine Cannon had 27 assists on the night while
Monique Reid led the way with 14 digs.
Fayetteville State got 12 kills from Xiamana Spikes and 11 from Kailyn Williams in the win, as they improved to 7-6 overall, 6-1 in CIAA play and 4-0 in Southern Division play.
JCSU drops to 3-8 on the season, 1-5 in CIAA play and 1-2 in the Southern Division.
