BLUEFIELD, WVa – Bluefield State went on a 17-point second half swing to tie the game to send into overtime and sealed the win with a two point conversion in the extra stanza as the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University football team (0-1) were handed their first loss of the 2022 season. The Golden Bulls fell 35-34 to the Blues of Bluefield State University (1-0) on Thursday evening at Mitchell Stadium.
Transfer Quarterback
Tyrell Jackson accounted for two touchdown passes as he threw for 371 yards on 30-of-41 pass completions. Wide Receiver
Brevin Caldwell had 119 yards on 11 receptions while
Tim Newman, Jr., rushed for 88 yards on 24 carries.
Defensively, the Golden Bulls were led by
Sharrod Simmon who finished with nine tackles, 2.5 and one interception.
Sincere Bennett and
Ishawn Shoulars both contributed seven tackles each.
For the contest, JCSU scratched 497 total offensive yards compared the Blues 376. The Golden Bulls had a total of 14 penalties that cost them 115 yards and were 9-for-14 on third down conversions.
The Blues were led by Freeland with 17 yards on 17 of 36 pass completions and a touchdown and also led in rushing with 104 yards on 11 carries.
JCSU will return to action Saturday, Sept. 10 at Allen University for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
