Golden Bulls Fall in Tight Battle at North Greenville, 53–51

Tigerville, S.C. — Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball came up just short on Thursday night, falling 53–51 to North Greenville in a back-and-forth matchup inside Hayes Gymnasium. The loss evens the Golden Bulls' record at 1–1 on the season.

JCSU struck early, using a 15-point opening quarter to take control, highlighted by strong inside play from La'Niya Simes and Salote Franklin. The Golden Bulls dominated the glass throughout the night, finishing with a 43–34 rebounding advantage and 36 points in the paint.

Simes delivered a standout performance, posting a 16-point, 11-rebound double-double, while Franklin added 8 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Tameia Shaw contributed 9 points, and the JCSU bench added 14 more behind solid outings from Jhaid Westbrook and Rylee Ghent.

After carrying a 23–20 lead into halftime, the Golden Bulls stayed in stride through the third quarter, where both teams traded baskets and defensive stops. However, North Greenville's perimeter shooting proved decisive late. The Crusaders knocked down seven three-pointers, including key fourth-quarter shots that helped them outscore JCSU 18–13 in the final frame.

Despite committing 24 turnovers, JCSU managed to convert defensive pressure into opportunities, scoring 21 points off turnovers and tallying 18 second-chance points behind their relentless rebounding.

North Greenville was paced by Jayla Cook with 13 points, while Kayla Gaston added 12 and Amiyah Clark-Lamelle chipped in 11 off the bench.

The game featured three ties and three lead changes, with JCSU fighting until the final possession before the Crusaders held on in the closing seconds.
