JCSU routes Bluefield State, 69-13 in Homecoming victory

CHARLOTTE, NC — The Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University delivered a dominant performance on Saturday afternoon at the Irwin Belk Complex, rolling past Bluefield State with a convincing 69-13 victory in front of 7,833 fans.

JCSU set the tone early with a 23-yard touchdown run by Trenton Lodge midway through the first quarter. Quarterback Kelvin Durham connected with Deandre Proctor on a 44-yard bomb to extend the lead to 14-3 after a Bluefield State field goal.

The second quarter saw an offensive flurry. Bluefield State's Julian Crawley caught a 34-yard touchdown to close the gap to 21-13, but JCSU's Isaiah Perry immediately responded with a 100-yard kickoff return, shifting momentum permanently. Perry's touchdown ties the record for kickoff return. Durham found Bobby Smith just before the half for a 14-yard TD to give JCSU a 35-13 lead at the break.

The Golden Bulls came out firing in the third quarter. Durham hit Brian Lane for a 65-yard touchdown, and Bobby Smith scored two more touchdowns — one on the ground and another through the air — as part of a dominant quarter where JCSU put up 27 unanswered points.

Isaiah Perry added a 39-yard touchdown reception, and backup quarterback Andrew Attmore joined the action in the fourth quarter, tossing a 25-yard score to Dontae Baker, capping a nearly flawless day for the Golden Bulls.
