CHARLOTTE - Johnson C. Smith University football team defeated #14 Valdosta State 28-16, inside Irwin Belk Complex, on a hot Saturday afternoon.
Valdosta State struck first early in the second quarter, with Eric Watts breaking loose for an 80-yard touchdown run. Matt Rolader added the extra point to make it 7–0.
Valdosta State extended their lead a few minutes later with a field goal by bringing the score to 10–0.
However, the Golden Bulls responded with a19-play, 85-yard drive capped off by a three-yard touchdown run by
Kelvin Durham with just 10 seconds remaining in the half.
Lukasz Smolen added the PAT, narrowing the gap to 10–7 at halftime.
The Golden Bulls came out of halftime when Durham found the end zone again in the third quarter with a four-yard touchdown run, giving JCSU their first lead of the game at 14–10.
Durham wasn't done yet — with less than a minute left in the third, he scored his third rushing touchdown of the day, this time from 11 yards out, extending the lead to 21–10.
In the fourth, Valdosta State's Holcomb connected with Curry for a 65-yard touchdown pass, cutting the JCSU lead to 21–16. However, a failed conversion left them trailing by five.
JCSU sealed the game with a late score, as Durham found Reggie Daniels in the endzone to seal the game, 28–16.
Up next the Golden Bulls are on the road to face the Vikings of Elizabeth City State University. Kick off is set for 1 p.m.
