CHARLOTTE — A last second turnover spoiled Johnson C. Smith's late comeback as the Golden Bulls fell 43–42 to Virginia Union on Wednesday night at Brayboy Gymnasium.
Johnson C. Smith led 42–39 with eight seconds remaining after La'Niya Simes knocked down two free throws. VUU's Serenity Johnson scored on a fast break layup, then forced a steal on the ensuing possession and hit the game winning jumper with .9 left.
Simes led Johnson C. Smith with 10 points, while
Tameia Shaw added nine. The Golden Bulls outscored Virginia Union 30–20 in the paint but shot just 1 of 11 from three point range and turned the ball over 18 times.
Virginia Union was paced by Maya Robinson's 12 points off the bench and received 10 points from Johnson, who also recorded four steals.
Johnson C. Smith dropped to 6–8 overall while, Virginia Union improved to 9–4. This was a non-conference game.
The Golden Bulls will continue its home stand to face defending CIAA Champions the Broncos of Fayetteville State University on Saturday, January, 17.
