CHARLOTTE — Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team delivered one of its most complete efforts of the season Saturday afternoon, but a late surge by Fayetteville State proved decisive as the Golden Bulls dropped a hard fought 95-83 CIAA southern division contest at Brayboy Gymnasium.

The Golden Bulls stayed within striking distance for much of the game, trailing just 43-41 at halftime after shooting 51.6 percent from the field in the opening half. The contest featured 10 ties and five lead changes as both teams traded baskets.

Fayetteville State (10-6, 5-2 CIAA) took control after the break, outscoring JCSU, 52-42 in the second half. The Broncos capitalized at the free-throw line, converting 26 of 33 attempts, and finished with 30 fast-break points.

JCSU (5-11, 3-6 CIAA) was led by Jared Davis, who scored 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds. Jamauri Bryant added 15 points and eight rebounds, and Marc Raye Jr. scored 15 points off the bench. Trey Pettigrew finished with 12 points and five assists.

Fayetteville State was led by Ezekiel Cannedy, who poured in 24 points and dished out 10 assists off the bench.
