Golden Bulls Hold Off Late Rally to Defeat Winston-Salem St., 76-64

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team built a dominant first half lead and withstood a late push to earn a 76-64 victory over the Rams of Winston-Salem State University on Thursday night at the C.E. Gaines Center.

The Golden Bulls (7-11, 5-6 CIAA) shot lights-out early, scoring 49 first-half points and taking a 49-33 advantage into the break. JCSU connected on 67.9 percent of its shots in the opening half, including 8-of-11 from three-point range, and never relinquished the lead.

Trey Pettigrew and Jamauri Bryant led the way with 24 points apiece. Pettigrew knocked down four of six from beyond the arc, while Bryant was efficient at the free throw line, going a perfect seven for seven. Jared Davis added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds, and Anthony Williams chipped in eight points while hitting both of his three-point attempts.

Winston-Salem State (7-11, 2-7 CIAA) mounted a strong second-half rally behind Khyelle Ingram, who scored a game high 27 points off the bench. The Rams used a 19–3 stretch to erase a 16-point deficit to two points midway through the second half, closing the gap to 51-49 and tying the game at 52 all with just over 12 minutes remaining.

The Golden Bulls went 15-of-18 from the stripe for the game and held Winston-Salem State to just 1-of-17 shooting from three-point range.

The Golden Bulls finished the night shooting 53.1 percent from the field and 52.9 percent from long range, while committing 14 turnovers. The Rams shot 43.1 percent overall and was led in the paint by Abou Camara, who finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
