CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Johnson C. Smith University basketball teams closed the regular season Saturday at Brayboy Gymnasium with a pair of losses to Claflin University.
The Golden Bulls women's team fell 49-41 after battling through nine lead changes. Johnson C. Smith (7-17, 4-13 CIAA) trailed 26-21 at halftime and remained within striking distance before being limited to seven fourth quarter points. Salote Franklin led the way with 12 points and 13 rebounds, while Egypt Moore-Colman added nine points and 10 boards. La'niya Simes contributed eight points and 11 rebounds as JCSU controlled the glass, 57-33.
On the men's side, Johnson C. Smith dropped a 65-52 decision to Claflin. The Golden Bulls (10-15, 8-10 CIAA) trailed 32-27 at halftime and were outscored 33-25 in the second half. Jamauri Bryant paced JCSU with 16 points, Orlando Hudson added 12 off the bench, and Anthony Williams recorded seven assists.
Prior to the men's game, Johnson C. Smith honored its senior class: Cameron McDonald, Jeremee Bryant, Jamauri Bryant, Tyson Bates, Javian Cannady, Anthony Williams, Tameia Shaw, Somer Wilson, Jhaid Westbrook and Nyasia James.
Both teams will next compete in the CIAA Tournament. Opening round opponents are TBD.
