Baltimore, Md - The Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls saw their season end with a 90-68 loss to Fayetteville State University Broncos in the semi finals of the CIAA Tournament at the CFG Bank Arena.
Johnson C. Smith (12-16, 8-10 CIAA) trailed 40-35 at halftime after shooting 40.6% in the opening period, but struggled to keep pace in the second half. The Golden Bulls shot 33.3% after the break and went 0 for 7 from 3-point range over the final 20 minutes to finish 2 of 16 from beyond the arc.
Trey Pettigrew led JCSU with 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting and 6 of 7 from the free-throw line.
Jamauri Bryant added 18 points and nine rebounds, while
Jared Davis recorded 14 points, six rebounds and five blocks.
Travon Gray provided a spark off the bench with nine rebounds as JCSU held a 20-13 edge in second-chance points.
Fayetteville State (22-6, 14-2 CIAA) used a 50-point second half to pull away, shooting 50% after halftime. Larry Howell scored 23 points and went 13 of 14 at the free-throw line, and Travon Cooper added 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting.
The Broncos outrebounded JCSU 46-34 and scored 20 fast-break points.
