Golden Bulls Hold Off Late Rally to split with Shaw, 9-7, 9-8

CHARLOTTE — Johnson C. Smith University used an early offensive surge and held on through a late push to defeat Shaw, 9-8, in a CIAA Southern Division  matchup on Friday afternoon.

The Golden Bulls (9-27) jumped out to a quick lead, scoring three runs in the first inning and adding one run in each of the second and third innings to build a 5-0 advantage. Johnson C. Smith extended its lead in the fourth inning with four more runs, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Aniylah Lane and an RBI single from Logan Masinky.

Shaw (4-23) responded in the third inning with three runs and erupted for five runs in the fourth, capped by a grand slam from S. Marks that cut the deficit to 9-7. The Bears added another run later in the inning to pull within one, but the Golden Bulls' pitching staff shut the door over the final three innings.
