Golden Bulls Fall to Claflin in twin bill on Saturday

CHARLOTTE  — Johnson C. Smith University jumped out to an early lead but could not hold off Claflin's offensive surge, falling 13-5 and 14-5 in a five-inning double header.

The Golden Bulls (9-29) struck first in the opening inning as Jahzira Hogan delivered an RBI single to score DazeJah Lanham. Later in the frame, Logan Masinky reached on an error, driving in two more runs to give Johnson C. Smith a 3-0 advantage.

Claflin answered immediately, plating one run in the first inning before tying the game with two runs in the second. The Golden Bulls regained the lead in the third inning through aggressive base running, as Skylar Bledsoe and Aniylah Lane each stole home to push the score to 5-3.

The momentum shifted in the bottom half of the third and into the fourth inning, as Claflin steadily chipped away before erupting for four runs in the fourth to take an 8-5 lead. Claflin sealed the game with a six-run fifth inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from T. Shoulders.

JCSU was limited to just one hit in the contest but capitalized on walks, hit-by-pitches and defensive miscues to produce five runs. Hogan accounted for the lone hit and one RBI, while Masinky drove in two runs.

The Golden Bulls remained aggressive on the base paths, recording multiple stolen bases from Lanham, Hogan, Bledsoe, Lane, Masinky and Tiera Arnold.

Masinky took the loss in the circle, allowing 10 runs on 10 hits over 2.2 innings. Arnold provided relief, tossing 1.2 innings.

Claflin tallied 16 hits in the game, led by T. Shoulders' four-hit, four-RBI performance. M. Tate also contributed three hits and two RBIs in the win.
