Assistant Coach, Football (Passing Game Coordinator/ Wide Receivers)
Former Johnson C. Smith University Offensive Coordinator and Charlotte native, Steve Shipp was named wide receivers’ coach in July 2022.

Shipp served as wide receivers’ coach at Independence High School (Charlotte, NC) from 2002-2007, winning five NC State Championships while coaching numerous all All-Conference, Region, State and American honorees. Shipp’s first college coaching opportunity came as the wide receiver’s coach at JCSU in 2010 under the guidance of then Offensive Coordinator, Maurice Flowers and then Head Coach, Steven Aycock.  In 2012, he was named Offensive Coordinator, replacing his mentor, Flowers. While OC of the Golden Bulls, the offensive unit progressed each year, earned the second most yards in a season in school history, while individual records for rushing, passing and receiving yards were all being rewritten.

Shipp is excited to return to Smith, a campus he grew up on.
“When we were sneaking on campus as little kids, I couldn’t help but be amazed by the Black College student. I knew right than that college was for me. Plus, having Flowers and Bear (Assistant Head Coach Kevin Thompson) back on the yard is like having half of the old band back together again.”

Shipp is married to wife Marie with four sons, Andre, Steven Jr., Jordan and AJ along with three grands Andre Jr., Mailyah and Baby-girl Taylor. He is current enrolled and working toward his Masters in Teaching – Learning Disabilities
