Dr. Darren Ramsey brings a unique combination of championship experience, leadership, and professional achievement to the Johnson C. Smith University men’s basketball program.
A Salisbury, North Carolina, native and West Rowan High School standout, Ramsey was the starting shooting guard on one of the most dominant teams in North Carolina high school basketball history. West Rowan compiled an incredible 61–0 record over his junior and senior seasons, capturing back-to-back state championships while Ramsey earned All-Rowan County honors. The team’s undefeated run remains one of the greatest stretches in Rowan County basketball history.
Ramsey continued his playing career at Johnson C. Smith University, where he helped build a winning culture as a guard for the Golden Bulls. Before graduating in 2008, Ramsey and the Golden Bulls captured the CIAA Tournament Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Committed to excellence beyond the court, Dr. Ramsey went on to earn his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, building a successful career as a respected dentist, entrepreneur, and community leader. He has remained dedicated to service throughout his career, including providing free dental care to underserved communities through mobile dental clinics.
Now returning to his alma mater as a coach, Dr. Ramsey is passionate about developing student-athletes both on and off the floor. His journey from an undefeated high school champion and CIAA champion to an accomplished dentist and mentor allows him to provide invaluable guidance to the next generation of Golden Bulls. His coaching philosophy emphasizes discipline, accountability, leadership, and the pursuit of excellence in every aspect of life.
