Robert Massey

Robert Massey brings a wealth of knowledge and experience as both a player and coach, with over 29 years in football spanning the NFL, collegiate, and high school levels. His coaching career includes stops at Hillside High School in Durham, NC, as well as North Carolina Central University, Livingstone College, Shaw University, and Winston-Salem State University. Most recently, he served as Head Coach at Winston-Salem State from 2019 to 2025, compiling a 25–30 record.

Throughout his coaching career, Massey has led and developed athletes as a Wide Receivers Coach, Defensive Backs Coach, Special Teams Coordinator, and Defensive Coordinator. He played a key role in helping Shaw University secure three championships and contributed to a championship win at Winston-Salem State University.

Massey also spent 10 years in the NFL, nine as a player and one as an assistant coach with the New York Giants. He was selected in the second round of the National Football League Draft by the New Orleans Saints in 1989, earned All-Rookie Team honors that same year, and was selected to the Pro Bowl in 1992 as a member of the Phoenix Cardinals. His professional career also included time with the Detroit Lions and Jacksonville Jaguars.

A 1989 graduate of North Carolina Central University, Massey was a two-time All-CIAA defensive back and an All-American his senior year. He is a member of the NCCU Sports Hall of Fame and the Rock Hill, South Carolina Pop Warner Football Hall of Fame.
