Richmond, VA – The Lady Golden Bulls basketball team picked up a 62-44 conference win over Virginia Union University Saturday afternoon inside Barco-Stevens Hall. JCSU improves to 13-4 overall and 6-4 in the CIAA, while VUU drops to 3-12 in the overall standings and 0-12 in the conference.
In the first half, Virginia Union came out strong with some sharp shooting from freshman Tysheska Simpson. Simpson scored seven of the Lady Panthers first 10 points. JCSU stayed balanced with an inside-outside scoring contribution from junior forward/center

Shontanette Shaw (Raeford, NC). Neely (6 points) and Shaw (4 points) accounted for the Lady Golden Bulls opening 10.
With a little less than five minutes remaining in the initial period, Johnson C. Smith held a 23-15 advantage. Junior guard
Tyra Breaux (Baltimore, MD) nailed a three-pointer from the right corner to put JCSU ahead by double digits. The Lady Panthers trailed 32-19 going into the locker room for halftime. Neely had a first half high of 11 points and six rebounds, shooting 50% from the field (5-10).
JCSU never let the led drop below double figures in the second half. Virginia Union shot 26% from the floor (7-27) in the second period en route to a 62-44 loss. The Lady Golden Bulls won the points in the paint battle 30-16 and shot 60% from the free throw line (9-15).
Neely finished with a game-high 15 points and eight boards. Senior guard
Shakira Clarke (Toronto, Canada) came off the bench, scored 10, and grabbed three rebounds. Breaux had nine points, followed by Shaw and senior forward/guard
Sheria Hatcher (Flint, MI) with eight points apiece.
Simpson concluded the contest 13 points, five rebounds, and seven turnovers for VUU.
“We stayed poised and focused on a strong defensive effort and that contributed to us getting this victory,” said JCSU head coach
Vanessa Taylor. “It's no rest for the wary, we came on this road trip to get two wins and we're certain Virginia State will be prepared when we come to their building.”
Johnson C. Smith will travel to Petersburg, VA to face Virginia State University on Monday, January 25th. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm inside Daniel Gymnasium on the campus of VSU. The Lady Trojans are currently ranked 25th in the ESPN/USA Today Division II poll and squeaked out a 59-50 win earlier this season (01/02/10) in Brayboy Gym.
