Durham - Shaw University scored on offense, defense and special teams to hand Johnson C. Smith its sixth loss of the season, 42-9 at Durham County Memorial Stadium on Saturday.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Bears drew first blood on a 66 yard touchdown run by Colema Blackson early in the second quarter to take a 7-0 lead over the Golden Bulls.
JCSU then drove 49 yards in 12 plays to cut the lead to 7-3 on a 35-yard field goal by
Brandon Howard.
Shaw's special teams added points to the scoreboard when Marquis Gorham returned a JCSU punt 51 yards to extend the Bears' lead to 14-3 at halftime.
Early in the third quarter, Shaw added another touchdown when Dorrel McClain ran 8 yards to paydirt to push the margin to 21-3.
The Bear defense got into the act when Devon Hunt returned an interception 69 yards to make the score 28-3.
Shaw scored two more times on a 29-yard pass from Keon Marsh to Raymond Green, Jr. and a seven yard TD run by Marsh early in the fourth quarter.
JCSU added a final touchdown when
Antonio Wallace connected with
Jachin Watkins for 19 yards to cut the margin to 42-9.
With the win, Shaw improves to 2-4 overall, 2-2 CIAA while Johnson C. Smith falls to 1-6, 1-4 CIAA.
JCSU returns to the Irwin Belk Complex to celebrate Homecoming when they host St. Augustine's Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
