The Johnson C. Smith football team scored in the air, on the ground and on special teams to capture a Homecoming victory over St. Augustine's, 31-3, inside the Irwin Belk Complex Saturday afternoon.
Quarterback
Antonio Wallace completed 22 of 33 passes for 332 yards and two touchdowns to lead a Golden Bull air attack. Wallace completed passes to eight different receivers including a 48-yard strike to
Braxton Gambrell at the beginning of the third quarter.
Sa'Von Williams led a JCSU defense that kept the Falcons out of the end zone. His 10 tackles, one qb sack and two tackles-for-loss helped limit SAU to one field goal for the entire game.
After a scoreless first quarter, JCSU scored first on a 41-yard field goal by
Brandon Howard to give the Golden Bulls a 3-0 lead going into halftime.
JCSU then exploded for 20 third quarter points after the break beginning with the Wallace to Gambrell connection followed by a one-yard TD run by
Jachin Watkins and an 8-yard TD pass from Wallace to Reginald Bryant.
St. Aug got its only points of the contest on a 39-yard field goal by Sean Smith late in the third quarter.
The Golden Bulls added a one-yard TD run by
Desean Binyard in the fourth quarter to complete the route.
With the win, JCSU improves to 2-6, (2-3 CIAA) while SAU falls to 2-6 (2-3 CIAA).
Johnson C. Smith will host Livingstone in the Commemorative Classic at the Irwin Belk Complex Saturday, November 3. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
