JCSU Men Beats St. Augustine's For School-Record Ninth Consecutive Win

Raleigh, N.C. (Feb. 10, 2018) –
The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team won their ninth consecutive game, setting a new school record in a 72-61 win to spoil Senior Day at St. Augustine's on Saturday at Emery Gym.

The Golden Bulls had four players in double-digits, led by senior guard
Robert Davis (West Friendship, Md.).  Davis had 20 points on a 7-of-14 shooting outing and hit three from distance in the win.  It marks the 35th consecutive game that he has scored in double-figures.

Fellow seniors Christian Kirchman (Roanoke, Va.) and Arthur Bennett (Powder Springs, Ga.) had 14 and 12 points, respectively in the win. Kirchman also added six rebounds and three assists while Bennett had seven rebounds and two blocks.

Junior Roddric Ross (Forest City, N.C.) also had a great afternoon, going for 14 points while shooting 6-of-10 from the field.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair, while JCSU jumping to a 13-6 lead, only to watch SAU battle back to force the 18-18 tie.  JCSU then went on another spurt to lead 29-20.  The Falcons then were able to cut the lead to 31-30 heading into the halftime break.

In the second half, JCSU took a 50-42 lead with 8:24 left and after SAU closed to 51-49, JCSU went on a 13-3 run to push ahead 64-52 with 4:33 remaining.  SAU would get no closer than eight points the rest of the way, as the Golden Bulls earned the 72-61 win.

SAU's Tyre Gathwright led all Falcon scorers with 15 points while Kenneth Collins and Kasey Bryant had 13 and 10 points, respectively.  SAU's Quincy January, the two-time CIAA Defensive Player of the Year, was limited again by the Golden Bulls, holding him to just seven points. JCSU held January to just four points in the first meeting between the two clubs in Charlotte.

The win improves JCSU to 17-7 overall, 10-2 in CIAA play and 7-0 in Southern Division play. The Golden Bulls have now won nine straight games, a new school record.

Previously, JCSU had won eight-straight games on three separate occasions during the 2008-09, 2000-01, and 1997-98 season's.

JCSU will travel to Chowan on Monday, Feb. 12 for a 7:30 p.m. tilt with the Hawks at the Helms Center in Murfreesboro, N.C.
