JCSU Hires Lamont Johnson to Lead Cross Country/Track and Field Programs
Charlotte, N.C. (Feb. 19, 2018) – Johnson C. Smith University announces the hiring of
Lamont Johnson to lead the Golden Bulls Cross Country/Track and Field programs.
Johnson joins the JCSU athletics staff after serving as assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
In just his first season with UWP, the Rangers saw four athletes named All-GLVC under Johnson, including Rhashad Gray, a five-time All-GLVC performer in 2017 and an NCAA Qualifier. Johnson helped his athletes break multiple school records, including both the men's & women's 4x100 relays. He helped coach Jetaeia Lewis to break the school records in the 60-meter, 200-meter, 100-meter and 200-meter.
No stranger to the CIAA, Johnson spent two seasons at Virginia State in Petersburg, Va. During his time at Virginia State, he coached Justin Williams to a berth in the NCAA Championships in the 110 hurdles and the Trojan men's 4x100 relay team to the NCAA's. Additionally, he also coached four other student-athletes to All-CIAA honors.
Johnson had a stint as an assistant coach at the Academy of Art where the Urban Knights won the NCAA Division II National Championship in both the indoor and outdoor seasons in 2012-13. There, he coached seven student-athletes who earned a total of 28 All-American honors, led by Vashti Thomas who was a four-time NCAA champion and 11-time All-American. He also helped Briana Stewart become a five-time All-American and break the school record in the 400 hurdles.
He also brings Division I experience to the JCSU programs, having coached at Eastern Michigan, Troy, Alabama, New Mexico and Iowa State.
While at Eastern Michigan, Johnson coached Aaliyah McKinney to a berth in the NCAA East Region in the 200 meters and conference championships in both the 100 and 200 meters.
Johnson earned his bachelor's degree in sociology from Iowa State in 2003.
