JCSU Women's Basketball Throttles WSSU, 76-60
Charlotte, N.C. (Feb. 21, 2018) – Johnson C. Smith University started strong and used a huge second quarter en route to a convincing 76-60 women's basketball win over Winston-Salem State on Wednesday evening in a rowdy Brayboy Gym.
The visiting Rams opened the scoring with a Teara Johnson layup just four seconds into the game, but it would be the only WSSU lead of the game, as JCSU took control early. JCSU would jump to the 14-7 lead and then extended it to 25-14 by the end of the quarter.
In the second quarter, JCSU outscored WSSU 18-8, jumping out to a 38-16 lead with 5:48 left following a free throw from
Jasmine Carter (Dacula, Ga.).
After leading 43-22 at halftime, WSSU was able to cut the JCSU lead to 14 points (54-40) with 1:28 left in the third quarter. WSSU then was able to trim the lead to 61-50 in the fourth quarter, but could get no closer, with JCSU taking the 76-60 win.
Every player on the Golden Bulls roster scored in the game, with sophomore
Malia Rivers (Pageland, S.C.) leading the way with 16 points. Rivers finished going 6-of-13 from the field while hitting three from distance. Carter also had a good night, finishing with 13 points. Both Carter and Rivers had a team-best five rebounds in the win.
Senior

WSSU got a double-double from Kandace Tate, as she finished with a game-high 19 points and 14 rebounds. Briana Arnold had 14 for the Rams with Tiana Edwards finishing with 11.
The win improves JCSU to 17-9 overall, 9-5 in CIAA play and 6-3 in the Southern Division while WSSU drops to 12-12, 7-8 in league play and 6-3 in the Southern Division.
By virtue of the 16-point win over the Rams, JCSU now owns the seeding tiebreaker with WSSU heading into next week's CIAA Tournament.
