JCSU Stays Hot With 70-56 Win Over Fayetteville State
Charlotte, N.C. (Feb. 7, 2018) – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team captured their eight-straight win in convincing fashion, downing visiting Fayetteville State 70-56 at Brayboy Gym on Wednesday night.
The Golden Bulls had little trouble with the Broncos after jumping to a quick 7-3 lead in the early goings. JCSU would lead by as many as 17 points (34-17) in the first half and shot 50% from the field (16-of-32), eventually taking the 36-21 lead at the break.
In the second half, JCSU bolted to a 27-point lead (52-25) at the 14:04 mark, their largest of the game. After FSU cut it to 56-35, JCSU again pushed the lead to 27 points, this time at the 8:27 mark with the score 64-37.
Fayetteville State would get the JCSU lead to 66-47 with 3:20 to play, but aÂ
Malik Ford (Salisbury, N.C.) free throw and a
Jaylen Dillard (Richmond, Va.) three-pointer pushed JCSU's cushion to 70-47 with 1:52 to play. FSU trimmed the lead to 14 points late in the game to provide the 70-56 final.
JCSU got a game-high 19 points from
Roddric Ross (Forest City, N.C.). Ross also had eight rebounds. Senior
Arthur Bennett (Powder Springs, Ga.) secured a double-double, his first of the season, coming down with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guardÂ
Robert Davis (West Friendship, Md.) kept his double-digit scoring streak alive with 10 points. He now has scored double-figures in 34 consecutive games. Davis also had six rebounds and six assists. Fellow senior
Christian Kirchman (Roanoke, Va.) had nine points and seven assists while sophomore forward
Cayse Minor (Winston-Salem, N.C.) had 10 rebounds.
FSU had a game-high 15 points from Jerimiah Pope while Josh Bryant had 12 points in the loss.
JCSU now stands at 16-7 overall, 9-2 in CIAA play and sis 6-0 in Southern Division play.
The Golden Bulls will look to keep their streak alive this upcoming Saturday, when they travel to St. Augustine's for a 4:00 p.m. tipoff from Emery Gym.
