JCSU Women Falls to Fayetteville State, 67-62
Charlotte, N.C. (Feb. 7, 2018) – Visiting Fayetteville State fought off a furious comeback effort and hit enough free throws down the stretch to take a 67-62 CIAA Southern Division game from the Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team on Wednesday night at Brayboy Gym.
After the Golden Bulls led 32-25 at halftime, Fayetteville State had a big third quarter, outscoring JCSU 21-9 and took a 46-41 lead into the fourth quarter.
In the final stanza, FSU built a lead as large as nine points (57-48) with 4:44 to play. JCSU then started chipping away at the Bronco lead, cutting to 60-54 with 2:03 left afterÂ
Malia Rivers (Pageland, S.C.) connected on a free throw.Â
Kendall Adams (Opelika, Ala.) then hit a pair of free throws to make it 62-56 followed by a
La'Zarea Bowens (Knightdale, N.C.) basket with 46 seconds to play, cutting the FSU lead to just 62-58.
Junior
Jasmine Carter (Dacula, Ga.) got a layup to fall to make it 62-60 with 35 seconds left, but FSU was able to get a Noni Kuumba free throw to boost the lead to 63-60. Another FSU free throw made it 64-60, then on the next Golden Bull possession, seniorÂ
Asha Jordan (Monroe, N.C.) scored to make it 64-62. Another Kuumba free throw made it 65-62, and following a JCSU timeout, the Golden Bulls could not get a decent look and turned the ball over with 12 seconds to play.
After JCSU was forced to foul, Kuumba hit two free throws to provide the 67-62 final.
JCSU shot just 34.9% from the field (22-of-63) and committed 21 turnovers in the loss. Adams led the way for JCSU with 18 points while Carter had 12 points and team-high eight rebounds. Bowens finished with 10 points and six boards for JCSU, who drops to 14-8 overall, 6-5 in CIAA play and 3-3 in the Southern Division.
FSU's Kuumba had a team-high 16 points while Jade Bracey had 15. Yakima Clifton and Breona Jones also had 12 points each for the Broncos, who improved to 11-9, 6-5 in CIAA play and 6-0 in in the Southern Division.
JCSU will look to bounce back from the disappointing loss when they hit the road on Saturday, Feb. 10 for a 2:00 p.m. matchup at St. Augustine's.
