CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Johnson C. Smith University football team had four different players score a touchdown en route to a 26-19 win over Lincoln (Pa.) at the Irwin Belk Complex, Saturday afternoon in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Cross Division Division contest.
The Golden Bulls (2-3, 1-1 CIAA) earned their first victory at home this season to improve to 1-1 at the Irwin Belk Complex while handing the Lions (0-5 Overall, 0-2 CIAA) their fifth-straight loss.
Malik Evans completed six-of-16 passes for 100 yards and rushed for a touchdown. Running back Emanuel Wilson led the running game for Smith with 135 yards on 19 carries and one touchdown while Donnell Thompson rushed three times for 24-yards and a touchdown.
Wide receiver Braxton Gambrell and Terry Michel hauled in one pass for 26 yards to lead the receivers.
Defensively, Demarcus Jordan led the Golden Bulls with 10 tackles, including .5 tackle for loss. Tykai Lawson-Oates had eight tackles, and three tackle for loss.
Lincoln punted the ball from three and out to Smith, which took the ball and returned it 52-yards for the touchdown from Gambrell to give JCSU a 7-0 at the 13:47 mark.
Lincoln would get on the board when Emmitt Hunt found Justin Johnson for 12 yards in the end zone to tie the game at seven all. The Lions stunned the Golden Bulls from 81 yards out when Hunt connect with Hunter Terrell to give the Lions the 13-7 lead.
With 5:00 on the clock in the third quarter, Donnell Thompson ran in the end zone for 15 yards, but the PAT was not good. JCSU led 14-13.
LU scored one last time from 16 yards out as Hunt connected with R. Patterson in the end zone. The Lions went for two but the conversion failed.
In the fourth quarter, Evans scampered in from seven yards out, however the PAT failed. JCSU led 20-19 with 13:34 on the clock.
On its final drive for the Golden Bulls, Wilson had his longest run of the day for 36 yards to scored the final touchdown for JCSU, with the final score 26-19.
The Golden Bulls finished the contest with 304 total offense (100 passing, 204 rushing) while LU tallied 433 yards that featured 350 through the air and 83 on the ground.
Smith will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 12, when the Golden Bulls play at Winston-Salem State. The game is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start from Winston-Salem, N.C.
