JCSU women fall to Fayetteville State in key Southern Division matchup

Despite a 32-18 advantage in bench points, the Johnson C. Smith women's basketball team dropped a key divisional road matchup to Fayetteville State, 72-66 on Saturday afternoon in Capel Arena.

Malia Rivers came off the bench to lead the Golden Bull effort with a team high 15 points including 3 of 4 shooting behind the arc. Blaire Thomas scored 14 points and Denajah Porter added 10 points.

After taking a 13-12 lead at the end of the first period, JCSU was hit with 60% shooting by the Broncos resulting in a 25-18 run in the second quarter giving FSU a 37-31 halftime lead.

FSU continued its hot shooting in the third quarter to extend its lead to 58-49 going into the final stanza.

The Broncos were led by Shantel Bennett with 17 points. Katisha Hyman added 15 points. Chantel Williams added 12 points. Brittany Drumgoole came off the bench to add 10 points to the total.

The loss drops JCSU back to 12-12 overall, 9-5 in conference play and 5-3 in the division.

FSU improves to 15-7 on the season, 10-4 in CIAA play and 7-1 in the Southern Division.

The Golden Bulls return to action Monday (Feb 11) when they travel to Orangeburg, S.C. to face Claflin University. Tip off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
