Johnson C. Smith clicked early, shooting 54% from the field and scoring 18 points off 11 St. Augustine's turnovers on the way to a 17 point halftime lead before withstanding a strong SAU comeback to take a 88-78 win over the Falcons.
The Golden Bulls were led by Roddric Ross with 19 points (15 in the first half) and 8 rebounds. Nenad Milenkovic came off the bench to score 15 points. Cayse Minor finished with 12 points. Justice Goodloe and Michael Roberson ended the game with 10 points each.
JCSU's bench scoring (35-11) helped the Golden Bulls keep control in the second half despite a surge by St. Aug that saw them cut JCSU's lead to single digits midway through the final period.
The Falcons were lid by Rashad George with 21 points and Tyre Gathright with 20. Craig McDaniel tossed in 11 points for SAU.
The victory pushes the Golden Bulls to 7-13 overall, 4-9 in the CIAA and 3-4 in the Southern Division.
St. Augustine's falls to 7-14, 4-10 and 4-3.
JCSU returns to action when they travel to Fayetteville, N.C. Saturday (Feb 9) to face the Broncos of Fayetteville State in the CIAA Television Game of the Week. Tip off is set for 4:00pm in Capel Arena.
