Chowan wins 32-29 with :09 on the clock

MURFREESBORO, N.C.  – The Johnson C. Smith University football team put up a great fight against Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) foe Chowan University, but the Golden Bulls fell 32-29 to the Hawks on the road at Garrison Stadium Saturday afternoon.
 
The loss is the first conference setback of the season for JCSU as the Golden Bulls drop to 0-2 on the year. Chowan improves to 1-0 within the league and 1-2 overall.

JCSU combined for 391 total offense, including 317 passing and 74 rushing but the Hawks tallied 488 offensive yardage that featured 251 on the ground and 237 through the air.

The Golden Bulls scored the game's first touchdown when running back Tyreik Leach rushed for his third touchdown of the season on a two-yard run, giving JCSU the 6-0 lead, the PAT was good from Jay Haggins.
 
JCSU would hold on to the seven-point advantage until Chowan scored when EJ Gatling produced a 50-yard rushing touchdown to even the score at seven all after the PAT.

Both teams scored in the second quarter as the Golden Bulls responded with a slant route to the left for Brevin Caldwell who ran in the 86-yard touchdown reception from Tyrell Jackson. The Hawks' next possession, Nijere Peoples rushed up the middle for 28 yards to even the score at 14 all as both teams went into the locker room for popcorn and soft drinks.
 
In the third quarter, CU added to its score on a 32-yard field goal, to led 17-14, with 7:27 left.
 
The Golden Bulls responded on back to back field goals as Haggins connected on a 29 and a 37 yards late in the third.
 
The Golden Bulls found themselves trailing 24-20 in the fourth quarter when the Hawks scored off a 25-yard pass from Caleb Pierce who connected to Justin Anderson with 13:32 in the fourth.

The next possession, the Golden Bulls took over the lead, 26-24 after a 25-yard pass from Jackson to Caldwell, the PAT was no good.

Late in the fourth the Golden Bulls relied on kicker Haggins as he connected on the 28-yard field goal, to give JCSU the 29-24 lead with 1:14 remaining.

However, Chowan went 76 yards on the final play as Gatling grabbed the 28-yard pass to score the final touchdown for the Hawks, the 2-point conversion was good.

Jackson finished with 317 yards on 26-of-49 pass completions and two touchdowns while Caldwell in a career-high 143 receptions yards for six catches and two TD's. Jacob Newman led the running backs unit with a team-best 10 carries for 46 yards.

Benari Black led the Gold and Blue with nine tackles, while Sharrod Simmon and Chris Jackson each had seven apiece.

JCSU will return to action Saturday Sept. 24 for its home opener against the Lions of Lincoln (Pa.) University. Kickoff is slated for 12 noon at Irwin Belk Complex
