DURHAM, N.C. - Johnson C. Smith University (6-1, 4-1 CIAA) made history Saturday afternoon, delivering its first shutout over Shaw University (2-5, 2-3 CIAA) since 1975 and the first shutout victory in Head Coach
Maurice Flowers' four-year tenure at Smith.
The Golden Bulls dominated from start to finish, scoring in every phase of the game and cruising to a 52–0 win in Durham.
Quarterback
Kelvin Durham led the offensive onslaught early, punching in a one-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter. Durham added two passing touchdowns in the second—one to
Deandre Proctor for 26 yards and another deep strike to
Brian Lane for 49 yards—helping JCSU build a commanding 28–0 halftime lead.
Bobby Smith also contributed a three-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter.
The Golden Bulls continued their dominance right after the break.
Isaiah Perry electrified the crowd with a 90-yard kickoff return to open the third quarter, followed by a Kevin Haynes Jr. 15-yard fumble recovery returned for a score just over a minute later. Kicker
Lukasz Smolen added a 40-yard field goal, and Durham connected with Proctor again for a 35-yard touchdown to close out the third quarter with a 52–0 advantage.
For Shaw, quarterback Alexander Marsh threw for 98 yards, while Jeffrey McDonald Jr. led the Bears' receivers with 51 yards.
