Johnson C. Smith pulls away late to earn 80–64 win over Virginia-Lynchburg

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team used a dominant fourth quarter and a balanced scoring effort to secure an 80–64 season-opening win over Virginia-Lynchburg on Friday evening at Brayboy Gymnasium. The game featured six ties and two lead changes before the Golden Bulls took control late, improving to 1–0 on the year.

Virginia-Lynchburg (0–4) hung tough through the first half, trailing just 40–36 at the break thanks to efficient shooting. But a cold third quarter—just 1-of-8 from the field—allowed JCSU to build separation before delivering a decisive 26-point fourth frame.

Johnson C. Smith shot an impressive 55.8% from the floor and overwhelmed the Dragons in the paint with 48 points inside and 24 fast-break points. Their depth also shined, with 33 bench points and 12 different players scoring.

Salote Franklin powered JCSU with a double-double, posting 18 points (7-9 FG) and 10 rebounds, while La'Niya Simes added 12 points and 3 assists. Nyasia James was nearly perfect from the field, scoring 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting.

JCSU's defense forced 31 turnovers, converting them into 34 points—a key separator as the game wore on.

Despite the loss, the Dragons saw strong efforts from Lovely Tua-Link paced VUL with 17 points, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists.

Virginia-Lynchburg shot 44.2% overall, but foul trouble and Johnson C. Smith's defensive pressure proved difficult to overcome.
