CHARLOTTE - Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team came up short as Virginia State University defeated the Golden Bulls, 83–61 on Saturday night at Brayboy Gymnasium The Golden Bulls drops to 5-8 overall and 3-3 in the CIAA. The Trojans improves to 9-8 and 2-3 on the year.
The Golden Bulls trailed 42–26 at halftime.
Marc Raye Jr. led JCSU with 17 points off the bench, while
Trey Pettigrew added 16 points and three assists. The Golden Bulls shot 53.3 percent from three-point range and 30 bench points. The Golden Bulls finished the night shooting 37.9 percent overall and 53.3 percent from beyond the arc.
JCSU generated 30 points off the bench and added 12 fast-break points, but was limited to 20 points in the paint and just five second-chance points.
Jacob Cooper of VSU led all scores with 26 points.
The Golden Bulls will host Bluefield State on Monday, Jan 12. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
