Jamauri Bryant poured in a game high 25 points for Johnson C. Smith University but Fayetteville State capitalized on trips to the free throw line to hand the Golden Bulls a 91-80 CIAA southern division loss Saturday at Capel Arena.
Johnson C. Smith (9-14, 7-9 CIAA) shot 42.6 percent from the field and scored 44 points in the paint, but Fayetteville State (18-6, 12-2 CIAA) converted 34 of 43 free throws and shot 59.1 percent in the second half to maintain control.
Bryant led the Golden Bulls with 25 points and eight rebounds, finishing 9 of 11 at the free-throw line.
Justin Bumbray added 16 points on 6 of 12 shooting, while
Anthony Williams chipped in nine points.
The Broncos led 40-33 early in the second half before JCSU trimmed the margin to three on a fast break jumper by Williams and a dunk by Bumbray. A layup by Bumbray at the 15:57 mark pulled the Golden Bulls within 46-44.
JCSU continued to battle and cut the deficit to 62-59 on a pair of free throws by Bumbray with 8:38 remaining. After Fayetteville State pushed the lead back to nine, Bryant sparked another run, scoring on a jumper and later converting free throws to bring the Golden Bulls within 80-70 with 3:27 to play.
Bryant's fast break layup with 2:18 left narrowed the gap to 83-73, but Fayetteville State answered at the foul line and in transition. The Broncos scored 26 second-half free throws and closed the game on a series of late baskets and free throws to secure the win.
The Golden Bulls finished 20 of 28 from the line and recorded 23 fast break points, matching Fayetteville State's 23. The Golden Bulls also received 23 bench points and forced 12 turnovers.
Larry Howell led Fayetteville State with 26 points, while Ezekiel Cannedy added 23 and Romeo Aquino scored 20.
