David Bowser is a seasoned athletics administrator and football coach with more than 25 years of experience in collegiate sports, marked by a deep commitment to student-athlete development, strategic leadership, and program advancement. He currently serves as Special Assistant to the Head Coach and Assistant Football Coach at Johnson C. Smith University, where he supports football operations, recruitment, and mentorship of student-athletes.
Before joining the Golden Bulls, Bowser served as both Director of Athletics and Head Football Coach at Saint Augustine’s University. During his tenure, he advanced operational standards, enhanced alumni and community engagement, and strengthened the university’s athletic brand through strategic leadership and alignment with academic goals. He led department-wide improvements in hiring practices, compliance oversight, and external partnerships, while also launching meaningful traditions such as an annual fundraising golf tournament and community-based scholarship efforts.
Bowser previously spent more than two decades at Fayetteville State University, where he held several key roles including Assistant Head Coach, Defensive Coordinator, and Recruiting Coordinator. His leadership helped build championship-contending teams and established him as one of the CIAA’s most respected defensive minds and recruiters.
A Charlotte native and standout student-athlete, Bowser is a proud graduate of North Carolina State University, where he competed at the collegiate level. Throughout his career, he has been recognized for his integrity, academic advocacy, and ability to cultivate team cultures that prioritize success on the field, in the classroom, and in life.
