JCSU Travels To Raleigh to Take on St. Augustine's
Charlotte, N.C. (Oct. 27, 2017) – Fresh off a 13-10 homecoming win over Shaw last weekend, the Johnson C. Smith University football team will look to keep their winning ways when it travels to CIAA Southern Division foe St. Augustine's. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the George Williams Complex.
Last weekend, sophomore kicker
Brandon Howard (Columbia, S.C.) hit a 44-yard field goal with 1:00 minute remaining to lift JCSU the 13-10 win. On the day, Howard went 2-for-3 on field goal attempts and averaged 41.2 yards per punt. He also booted a career-long 58-yarder in the win. For his efforts, Howard was named the
CIAA Special Teams Player of the Week.
Quarterback
Terrance Ervin (Richmond, Va.) continued his solid play, tossing for 221 yards on a 16-of-27 effort. Senior
Eugene Holmes (Columbia, S.C.) led the Golden Bulls in receiving with 53 yards on three catches while fellow senior teammate
Gabriel Yuille (Baltimore, Md.) managed 52 yards on three catches.
Jachin Watkins (Charlotte, N.C.) led the way on the ground, running for 51 yards on 19 carries. Freshman teammate
Dedric Robinson (Pageland, S.C.) scored JCSU's lone touchdown on the day and finished with 21 yards rushing on seven carries.
Defensively,
Kyaire Bynum (Lancaster, Pa.) had a team-leading 11stops, eight which were solo while linebacker
Marcel Toran (Washington, D.C.) had eight tackles.Â
JeJuan McCalston (Covington, Ga.) and
Basir Wright (Douglasville, Ga.) also had a great afternoon, as each had an interception. McCalston also had two pass breakups in the win.
St. Augustine's enters after falling by a 34-31 score at Fayetteville State last Saturday. The Falcons nearly erased a 21-point second half deficit until FSU made the late kick.
The Falcons had success on the ground against the Broncos, rushing for 242 yards. Sophomore Jeremiah Miller gained 116 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries and teammate Josh Glisson ran 16 times for 94 yards and a score. Quarterback D.J. Johnson rushed for 32 yards in addition to completing 17 of 28 passes for 150 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Defensively, James Hickman, the CIAA leading tackler, tallied 12 tackles, a half sack, 1.5 tackles for loss and an interception. Defensive back Roy Garris had 11 tackles and senior defensive lineman Chasz Cosby collected 10 tackles, one tackle for loss and one forced fumble. Â Rounding out the defensive efforts for the Falcons was defensive lineman Tristian Green, as he totaled nine tackles, 0.5 sacks and one tackle for loss.
