Women's Basketball opens 2022-23 season Friday

CHARLOTTE - The 2022-23 season for the Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team will officially tip-off on Friday, Nov. 11, when the Golden Bulls travel to Elizabeth City, North Carolina, for the CIAA/SIAC Challenge hosted by Elizabeth City State University. The Golden Bulls will take on the Panthers of Clark Atlanta at 5:30 p.m., followed by a matchup against the Rams of Albany State on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The reigning CIAA Southern Division champions JCSU went 15-10 overall and 10-6 in CIAA play during the 2021-22 campaign under Head Coach Stephen Joyner, Jr. with the Golden Bulls.

JCSU returns two of its top scorers from last season, including senior guard Shaniya Jones. Jones earned All-CIAA backcourt honors last year after leading the team with 14.1 points per game.   Fifth-year forward Le'Zarea Bowens made the All-CIAA Preseason Frontcourt Team despite missing most of last season. However, prior to the coronavirus pandemic Bowen played in 83 games for the Golden Bulls from 2017-2020. Bowens earned All-CIAA honors in 2019-20 when she averaged 12.3 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.1 steals and 1.1 blocks per game.

The Golden Bulls were selected third in the Southern Division and sixth overall in the CIAA Preseason Poll.

After the CIAA/SIAC Challenge, the Golden Bulls will face Augusta University on Nov. 16. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
