CHARLOTTE - The Johnson C. Smith University women's track & field team delivered a series of standout performances across sprints, hurdles, jumps, and relays, highlighted by multiple top-five finishes and NCAA Division II qualifying marks.
Sprints
JCSU showcased exceptional depth in the short sprints.
In the 60 meters,
Athauna Williams led the way with a 7.81 for 17th overall, followed closely by freshmen
Jaeda Davis (19th, 7.83) and junior
Gabrielle Maye (22nd, 7.86). Sophomore
Nijah Lewis rounded out the group in 26th with a 7.94.
The 200 meters featured another strong group effort as freshman
Janya Barnes stormed to a 3rd-place finish in 24.70. Davis clocked 24.97 for 4th, while
Abigail Wicks (25.30, 8th) and Williams (25.41, 11th) added additional top-tier results.
In the 400 meters, Wicks highlighted the event with a runner-up finish in the seeded section, running a season-best 56.62. Barnes followed with a 7th-place seeded finish at 58.28. Freshman
Paris Brown also turned in a strong performance in the open 400, placing 4th in 59.58.
Middle Distance
Sophomore
Kamaya Speight represented the Golden Bulls in the 800 meters, running 2:33.82 in Section 4 to finish 29th overall.
Hurdles
Junior
Gabrielle Maye posted one of the team's top marks of the day, finishing 2nd in the 60m hurdles with an NCAA Division II qualifying time of 8.73. Freshman
Skye Spencer-Layne added an 11th-place finish in 9.10.
Relays
The Golden Bulls capped the track events with a standout performance in the 4x400 relay, as the quartet of Wicks, Maye, Brown, and Barnes combined for a strong 3rd-place finish in 3:50.45, earning an NCAA DII qualifying mark.
Field Events
Freshman
Sahlay Reid cleared 1.44m in the high jump to finish 16th overall.
In the long jump, freshman
Skye Spencer-Layne led the Bulls with a 5.50m leap, placing 5th. Lewis jumped 5.19m for 11th, while Reid (4.93m) and Davis (4.78m) also contributed solid marks.
Lewis continued her strong day in the triple jump, earning 14th with a best mark of 10.89m.
Freshman
Alesia Sylverain wrapped up field action with a 20th-place finish in the shot put, recording a season-best 10.96m.
