JCSU Women Finish Fifth, Highlighted by Relay Title and CIAA Academic Award

MILLS SPRINGS, N.C. - The Johnson C. Smith University women's track and field team placed fifth overall with 47 points at the CIAA Indoor Track Championship held at the Tryon International, highlighted by a relay championship, multiple podium finishes and several record breaking performances.

Fayetteville State won the team title with 133 points, followed by Claflin (123.5) and Winston-Salem State (113).

JCSU closed the meet with a victory in the 4x400 meter relay. The quartet of Abigail Wicks, Gabrielle Maye, Paris Brown and Janya Barnes combined to run 3: 47.57 to secure first place and 10 team points.

Barnes led the way individually with a second-place finish in the 400 meters, clocking a personal best 56.25.

Wicks followed with a third place finish in 56.49, also a personal record. Freshman Skye Spencer-Layne finished fifth in the final in 8.85, a personal record in the 60 meters.

Alesia Sylverain captured first place in the pentathlon shot put with a throw of 11.66 meters (38 feet, 3.25 inches), setting a personal record. Sylverain added a personal best 9.80 in the pentathlon 60-meter hurdles and cleared 1.40 meters (4-7) in the high jump.

Kamaya Speight won the pentathlon 800 meters in 2:37.02 to close her competition.

The Golden Bulls won the CIAA Freddie Vaughn Team Academic Award, with a team GPA of 3.33.
