PETERSBURG, VA. – The Johnson C. Smith University women's track and field team delivered a strong all around performance at the CIAA Outdoor Track Championships placing sixth overall, highlighted by a relay title, multiple podium finishes and several personal best marks.
Freshman
Janya Barnes led the way with a championship performance in the 400-meter hurdles, winning the final in 1:01.87 to secure 10 team points after qualifying with a 1:01.68 in the prelims. Barnes also contributed to both scoring relays, helping the 4x100-meter relay place third (47.17) and running a leg on the winning 4x400-meter relay.

Paris Brown and Barnes captured the title in 3:46.85, recording a season best and earning 10 points. Earlier, the 4x100-meter relay squad of
Nijah Lewis, Maye,
Athauna Williams and Barnes clocked 47.17 to finish third and add six points.
Junior
Gabrielle Maye turned in a busy and productive meet. She placed fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (14.27) and sixth in the 200 meters (24.81), scoring a combined seven individual points. Maye also advanced through the 100-meter hurdles prelims with a 14.27 and qualified for the 200-meter final with a 25.07.
Sophomore
Precious Durand added to the team's scoring in the distance events, finishing third in the 800 meters with a personal-best 2:16.39, a mark that ranks among the top HBCU performances this season. She advanced out of the prelims with a 2:20.31.
Freshman
Skye Spencer-Layne impressed in her championship debut, qualifying for the 100-meter hurdles final with a personal-best 14.30 before placing seventh in 14.85 to score two points. She also finished ninth in the long jump with a leap of 5.48 meters.
In the sprints, several athletes posted competitive times in the prelim rounds. Lewis (25.62), Brown (25.64) and Williams (25.94) competed in the 200 meters, while
Abigail Wicks ran 57.73 in the 400-meter prelims for a season-best HBCU ranking.
Field event highlights included a personal-best 37.07 meters in the discus from freshman
Alesia Sylverain, and a 10.93-meter effort in the triple jump from Lewis, good for 10th place.
Sahlay Reid competed in multiple events, including the javelin (25.53m) and triple jump (10.14m)
